Ground Modelling
Comprehensive surface creation, representation and volumes within CAD
KeyTERRA-FIRMA Ground Modelling works entirely within AutoCAD or Bricscad to calculate
a series of 3D
triangles to accurately represent the existing ground/site, design or
other surface. The system is
very simple to use but extremely flexible and suitable for a wide range
of applications (in addition
to typical Development and Road projects) including Coastal erosion studies,
Hydrographic
Survey, Landfill, Quarries and Airfield approach studies.

Rendered views of the model may be created within AutoCAD or Autodesk VIZ
Most models are created from drawing entities (3D Polylines are recognised
as break lines)
but very large models are also created rapidly from .xyz files. There
is practically no limit
to the number of triangles – several million is manageable subject
to PC specification etc.
Outputs
Contour drawing (with a range of annotation/label options)
3D Grid for 3D viewing in CAD
Enquire level and gradient at any point within the modelled area
Average area calculation (to help fix slab level)
Create a long section by picking a 2D Polyline (e.g. representing horizontal
alignment)*
Create cross sections*
Drape functions to convert 2D information into 3D
Embankments calculated and drawn to user specified gradients etc.
Volume calculations comparing two models (e.g. existing and proposed)
Water volume calculations
A number of model modification and reporting functions
Colour mapping using the true colours to illustrate cut
and fill etc.
Slope analysis
Zones of Visual Impact (ZVI)
* Long and cross sections are drawn to high presentation standards with
user specified styles
and provide massive time savings compared to “standard” CAD
or the drawing board!
Examples
Cross sections instantly drawn to high presentation standards
 Embankments drawn after 3D Designs

Colour mapping using true colours to
illustrate beach loss and gain.

Contours are rapidly drawn as
2D Polylines to user specified
intervals and layers etc.

Water related features include volume calculation by
banding as specified by the Environment Agency,
flood area mapping, 3D views and functions to help
with river modelling and balancing ponds.
