Road and 3D Site Design

Flexible design tools working within AutoCAD and Bricscad

The KTF Design module combines Horizontal and Vertical Alignment design with powerful 3D String Design functions. Suitable for new roads, junctions, widenings, improvements and roundabouts plus car parks & sports pitches. KTF Urban functions expanded including Tutorial and Sequence documentation with KTF 7.

  • From initial concept to full Engineering Design
  • Horizontal Alignments represented simply as 2D Polylines
  • Complex geometry including superelevation and transitions
  • Road and Building setting out schedules easily produced
  • Not just Road Design but a set of tools for a broad range of 3D Site design

Vertical Alignment Design takes place on long sections created from the Ground Model. Routines ensure that vertical curve geometry is easily defined with alternative Vertical alignments associated with the horizontal design. One Vertical Alignment is represented simply as a 2D Polyline on the section. Simple functions to help with Drainage design have been included in addition to the MicroDrainage link that automatically draws drainage details onto the long section from WinDes files, helps build the pipe network and create schedules in the drawing.

Flexible String Design features combine the Horizontal and Vertical Alignments to output 3D Polylines representing channel lines etc., Report files, Design long sections (channels) and Design cross sections. A dynamic viewer shows the relationship between existing ground and the design by “cruising along the new road”. Turning heads and other 2D geometry are represented as 2D Polylines and simply converted into 3D by specified gradient from the Master String.

Special projects that have relied on KeyTERRA-FIRMA include the rock revetment scheme at Easington (above) to protect the Gas Terminal and the unique dual guided bus lanes in Leeds.

Low points are easily located on channels.

The String Design features enable the construction of the wire frame design drawing from which the design model is made. Rendered views are created using AutoCAD or Autodesk VIZ.

Optimise highway refurbishment/renewal design

The features within this part of KeyTERRA-FIRMA provide powerful routines to create cross section data for road surveys (e.g. for maintenance). They include programs to help optimise overlay design for road re-surfacing schemes where pavement renewal is being designed within the existing carriageway. The existing section data is stored in a section level data file and can be input or modified with the dedicated editor or alternatively Microsoft Excel can edit this file. The simple format lists in specific columns Level, Code, Chainage and Offset. If you have any existing similar data contact us and we should be able to provide a conversion program to input this data to our standard ".dat" file. Users with an electronic system including a "Level Logger" will be able to input data directly subject to confirmation of data format.

Overlay design uses this dialogue to interactively relate the overlay design with the existing road and to optimise the amount of material etc.

The level data looks like this:

overlay3Overlay design may be a mixture of “hat” or vertical Alignment Designs for the centre and channel lines.
